Universal Design Toolkit

Universal Design Toolkit

In November 2006, VHDA introduced the Universal Design Toolkit at the Governor's Housing Conference in Norfolk, VA. The Toolkit was designed to provide architects, designers, developers, contractors and homeowners with a series of tools to apply Universal Design techniques.

Universal Design is an approach to the design of products, services and environments to be as usable as possible by people of all ages and abilities. Within the realm of housing, incorporating this inclusive design concept can simplify life by accommodating the needs of all people who may share a living space-at little or no extra cost. While accessible or adaptable design requirements are specified by codes and are aimed at benefiting only particular populations (those with mobility limitations) and building types, Universal Design targets all people of all ages, sizes, and abilities and can be applied to all buildings.

Each year VHDA sponsors two Universal Design seminars across the state entitled "Creative Housing for the 21st Century." Each seminar is designed to provide an understanding of the principles and practical applications of Universal Design.
